Sensors

Some of the Kontakt.io beacons, in addition to their Bluetooth radio for broadcasting iBeacon and/or Eddystone packets, are also equipped with sensors that collect data about the beacons and their surroundings.

Info

In most cases to take advantage of sensors, the beacons need to have Kontakt.io Telemetry Packet enabled first. Data from most sensors is available via Location & Data API streams and Kontakt.io Mobile SDKs

Accelerometer

Beacons that have an accelerometer can report raw acceleration values that they're experiencing on 3 axes, as well as detecting predefined events like free-fall and double-tap.

Specification

STMicroelectronics LIS2DH
Measurement range Selectable between one of four modes: ±2g/±4g/±8g/±16g
Sensitivity Depends on measurement range: ±2g - 16mg/digit, ±4g - 32mg/digit, ±8g - 64mg/digit, ±16g - 192mg/digit
Detectable events Selectable between one of five possibilities: movement, free-fall, double-tap, movement and double-tap, free-fall and double-tap

Light sensor

To make sure a beacon equipped with a light sensor does not consume too much battery, the measurements of light intensity are not reported in common units like lux or nits. The light sensor uses a very simple scale from 0 (complete darkness) to 100 (bright, sunny day without any clouds and shadows).

Even due to these limitations, light measurements are very reliable and in the same conditions will present reproducible results. Making this a perfect solution for triggering actions depending on specific conditions.

Additionally, light sensor data is used for Power Saving.

Motion Sensor

This sensor is an exception - when it detects motion it does not report it anywhere and this information is used internally by a beacon. At the moment of writing this document, only the Card Tag CT16-2 is equipped with motion sensors and they use them to engage and disengage Power Saving. Currently, it's not possible to use this sensor for other purposes.

Thermometer

Measuring ambient temperature is possible thanks to a thermometer built into the accelerometer package. All beacons equipped with an accelerometer can also report temperature from places around them.

Specification

STMicroelectronics LIS2DH
Measurement range From -40°C to +85°C

Calibration

The thermometer used on our beacons provides accurate information about temperature changes, but sometimes it might be necessary to provide an offset for the raw temperature to get actual values. Both the Kio iOS and Android administration apps allow changing the offset per beacon. You can also create a bulk configuration via our API by setting the temperatureOffset parameter for the new configuration.
