Configuration

This section explains all steps required to start using Portal Light gateway.

Make sure you have created your Kio Cloud account and claimed devices using your Order ID - please check Getting started section

Configure Portal Light using the Kio Gateway Installer App

Set SSID and Password

Go to Device Management -> Gateways

Select the gateways that you need to set the password for and click Bulk Edit. Set the correct Network Name and Network Password. After you click Save Changes, a new configuration is created in Kio Cloud. This configuration is automatically synchronized with your Kio Gateway Installer App.

Plug the Portal Light into a power socket and wait for the solid red light on the device.

Open the Kio Gateway Installer app on your mobile device, click Install devices located on the bottom of the screen > select Portal Light Setup.

Bring your mobile device close to the Portal Light device that you are configuring.

Follow the instructions on the mobile app. The Portal Light is automatically detected and the app will proceed with the config update.

Configure Portal Light using default SSID

Setting up Default Network for Portal Light

When you power on the Portal Light for the first time, it automatically starts searching for its preconfigured WiFi network. When you unbox the Portal Light and plugged it into a power socket for the first time, it needs to synchronize with Kio Cloud. This step is called provisioning.

You need to set up this network to enable full functionality of the device.

The Default network also applies in the case when your Portal Light loses its connection with your own custom WiFi. It will then automatically reconnect to the default network (whenever this network is available).

Set up kontaktDeployment SSID

The first step is to set up an additional SSID on your access point or mobile phone hotspot using the parameters below. Network configuration:

  • SSID - kontaktDeployment
  • Password - LTPGjjwp256
  • Network security - WPA, WPA2-PSK, WEP
  • WiFi Frequency - 2.4 GHz

Customers can request to have their network name and password preconfigured on the Portal Light during the production. The network setting details and your Kio Cloud account need to be provided when ordering Portal Lights.

Plug in your Portal Light to a power socket.

The device will start and you will see the following LED sequence on the device:

  • RED LED (up to 5 sec) - the device is starting up
  • BLUE LED blinking (up to a few minutes) - Firmware upgrade in progress
  • YELLOW LED blinking (up to 1 minute) - Connected to default network - waiting for time synchronization
  • GREEN LED solid - The Portal Light is connected to the network, scanning Bluetooth devices and sending data to the cloud. Now you can also reconfigure Portal Light to any other WiFi network via the Kio Cloud.

Warning

In case of a RED LED status - indicates no default network is available and no new network has been configured on the Portal Light. Please verify your default network settings are correct and if it's on 2.4 GHz.

Set up Custom WiFi network

Next sign in to your Kio Cloud account > select Device Management > select Gateways -> locate the gateway and verify it's Online.

Select one gateway to setup WiFi connection parameters or use Bulk Edit to send new configuration to multiple devices. Populate Network Name with your SSID name and Network Password with password to this network.

Now your Portal Light is correctly configured and communicating with Kio Cloud.

Place Portal Light location

In order for the Kio Cloud Location Engine to correctly turn beacons reading into their real, the Location Engine needs to know where Portal Lights are physically installed in a room.

From your Kio Cloud Smart Location, you need to place the Portal Light at its installed floor location.

Sign in to Kio Cloud > select Smart Location > select the Campus location > select the Building > select the Floor > from the upper-right corner, click CONFIGURE FLOOR.

Select the Gateways tab > click ADD GATEWAY > select the Gateway > from the floor plan, place it at its exact install location > select SAVE.

If the floor has multiple gateways, be sure to place each of them.

When you’re done placing your Portal Lights, click FINISH CONFIGURATION. It may take some time for the Kio Location Service to correctly calculate positions.
