Configure a Portal Beam

This section explains how to configure the location of a Portal Beam. During configuration, you will add the Portal Beam to its location within your Kio Cloud Smart Location.

Before you begin make sure your Smart Location includes the room (space) where the Portal Beam is installed. To learn how to set up your locations, see the Smart Location article.

Configuration options

You can configure a Portal Beam with the Kio Gateway Installer app (recommended) or from Kio Cloud. From the app, you will also perform tests to verify its location and connectivity.

Kio Gateway Installer mobile app

The app is available for both Apple iOS and Android mobile devices. Download from the App Store or Google Play Store.

How to configure a Portal Beam with the mobile app

Before you mount a Portal Beam to a ceiling, be sure to complete the below steps. You will need to scan the QR code located on the back of the device.

Open the Kio Gateway Installer app > sign in with your Kio Cloud email and password > click the + icon > select Beam Setup > from the top of the screen, click the navy blue bar to activate the QR reader > from the back of the Portal Beam, scan its QR code.

Select where the Portal Beam is located

After its QR code is scanned, the app recognizes the Portal Beam and prompts you to choose its location.

Click Choose location > select the Campus location > the Building > and the Room where the Portal Beam is installed.

Perform Portal Beam tests

Confirm its location details and mount the device. Once it's mounted, select Next to perform the three tests.

  • Test Phone to Beacon - checks the connection between the app and Portal Beam. When the connection is successful, the Portal Beam LED will blink green.

  • Test IR - checks if the Portal Beam is broadcasting the correct location room ID.

  • Test Room Occupancy - please stand under the Portal Beam for at least 20 seconds. This allows the Portal Beam to recognize you and update the occupancy counter. After 20 seconds, click Test room occupancy.

If all tests are successful, the Portal Beam configuration and installation are now complete.

You can either choose Beam Setup to add another Portal Beam or click Exit. From the app, you can always return to Beam Setup by clicking the + icon.
